Personal Decision Counseling

Personal Decision Counseling (Image of Signpost)Are you stuck in a big personal decision? Do you feel overwhelmed by uncertainty?

Decision counseling can help, by giving you a process and tools to think through your options.

If you’re facing tough decisions, it is normal – in fact, smart – to have doubts about whether you are making the right choices.

If people are telling you things like “just go with your gut”, think again. The hardest decisions involve tough trade-offs, risks and uncertainties, and sometimes great complexity and information overload. Our gut feelings, while important, are not enough to face an important decision.

The costs of not making the best decisions are immeasurable—especially the costs of lost opportunities.

Personal decision counseling offers a process to help you think more systematically and at the same time more creatively about your big decisions. Because of that, it is a very effective way to work on your most difficult or consequential decisions. You can read more about my personal decision counseling approach and my mission.

Personal Decision Counseling: How it Typically Works

We will start out by defining as clearly as possible what your decision is: what is the problem you would like to solve with my help? Defining the problem may or may not be a straightforward first step. In complex decisions, we may revisit that question again later in the process. The next step is an in-depth clarification of your personal criteria. What matters most for your decision? What are your main concerns, hopes, fears and desires related to this decision? This may include exercises to explore your core values. Based on those very personal criteria, we can then explore and evaluate your options. There are always more and better options out there than the ones that first come to mind, so our challenge will be to think creatively. There are tools that can help us with that. Finally, to evaluate your options and determine which ones are your winners, we may use visual tools, such as decision tables and trees. If the decision is still difficult at that point, we can evaluate your options with weights and numerical ratings. Or, I’ll help you think about particularly uncertain options with risk analysis tools, such as scenario trees. Oftentimes however, these formal tools won’t even be necessary, because you’ll have gained clarity long before the end of this process. (This happens to the regular disappointment of my geek self who loves the tools. ;)) Once you know what path to take, I’ll help you plan your next steps to turn your decision into reality.

Decision Counseling Rates and Packages

Individual sessions — $180 per 45 minutes

Personal decision counseling package  — $900: six sessions with flexible timing. We will typically follow the process I described above. This process will give you the clarity you need to move forward with your decision.

Three month counseling package — $1,620 (a 25% discount compared to 12 individual sessions). With this package we can tackle decisions that are not only difficult to make, but also hard to implement. We usually first follow the process I described above, and then I’ll help you plan, take action, and trouble-shoot. It is also a package that makes sense if you have multiple decisions to work on. (This package can include elements from productivity coaching, changing habits, career coaching, etc, as needed).

Are you ready to start? If so, you can schedule your first decision coaching session right here. Or if you’d like to find out more, schedule a brief phone call with the same button.

Now I can recognize that having a defined process and working through decisions can help me find deeper satisfaction and mitigate risk when choosing between many options. The ability to recognize when I’m limiting my alternatives because I have the wrong values in mind will be huge for the rest of my life, as I navigate career and family.”
